Aerobics
A form of exercise using the same large muscle group, rhythmically, for a period of 15 to 20 minutes or longer while maintaining 60-80% of your maximum heart rate. Aerobic exercise conditions the heart and lungs by increasing oxygen available to the body and by enabling the heart to use oxygen more efficiently. Many different forms are practiced from Aqua aerobics in a pool using the support and resistance of the water to step aerobics where a small platform is used to step on and off.

Aromatherapy
This involves the application of fragrant essential oils during a variety of treatments such as massages, facials and bodywraps. Different oils are used to induce different therapeutic benefits. For example; Almond, used for moisturising skin; Lavender, excellent for refreshing tired muscles, feet and hands; Rosemary, helps combat water retention and cellulite and Ylang Ylang, soothing and relaxing during times of tension and stress.

Ayurveda
An elaborate Indian medical science that uses a wide variety of techniques to balance and heal the mind, body and spirit. This includes nutrition, herbal medicine, massage, aromatherapy and meditation to bring about harmony in the body. The treatment starts with a consultation during which your body type (dosha) is determined. This will influence the resulting diet, massage and herbal remedies that are prescribed.

Exfoliation
This is where a skin treatment is given that removes the upper layer of dead skin, leaving your body feeling fresh and invigorated. A variety of techniques can be used, such as: salt scrub, body glow, brush & tone, rub and loofah.

Fango
A therapeutic clay mud, highly mineralised which may be mixed with oil or water. This is applied all over the body as a heat pack to eliminate toxins and restore tone and glow to the skin.

Herbal Wrap
Strips of cloth, soaked in a heated herbal mixture are wrapped around the body. Afterwards there is a period of rest. This relaxing treatment is used to remove impurities and detoxify.

Homeopathy
A form of medicine based on using the body's ability to heal itself. Minute quantities extracted from herbs, plants and minerals are used that cause symptoms much like those manifested by the disease. Different tonics are matched to an individual's specific needs and used to improve a range of conditions from joint pain to headaches.

Hydrotherapy
This is the generic term for water therapies. Treatments include jet sprays, mineral baths and underwater jet massage used to improve circulation and skin tone.

Massage
Many different types of massage are offered at the properties we feature. A few of these are mentioned here: Sports - This is a deep-tissue massage targeted specifically at muscles used in athletic activities; Swedish - Incorporates gentle kneading and smooth strokes with the aim of deeply relaxing your muscles to stimulate circulation; Thai - A balancing treatment that works on the energy flows within the body to create a sense of total well-being. Other types of treatment that involve massage are illustrated here such as ayurveda and reflexology.

Reflexology
An ancient chinese technique focussing on pressure points in the soles of the feet and in the hands. Each point corresponds to a different organ or system in the body. Manipulation helps to restore the flow of energy throughout the body.

Sauna
A dry-heat room that opens the pores and promotes sweating, thus eliminating impurities from the body. Using a sauna can boost the immune system, ease aches and pains and speed up the metabolism.

Steam Room
A wet-heat room that like saunas, helps deep-cleanse the skin, detoxify and relieve muscle pain.

Thalassotherapy
Thalassotherapy comes from the Greek word thalasso, or sea, and is a treatment system using fresh heated seawater which induces an exchange of minerals and toxins between the blood and the water. As with thermal spas, thalassotherapy centres benefit those with certain medical conditions such as arthritis, and also those without.

Yoga
The art of using postures and controlled breathing to stretch and tone the body, calm the central nervous system and bring about a meditative state.

Zen
By working along the meridians (energy pathways) of the body, using supportive pressure, touching on specific acu-pressure points, and rebalancing your energy, Zen Shiatsu creates a feeling of deep relaxation as well as renewed vitality.
